- Asimina triloba 'Tropical Treat' (also known as the three-lobed pawpaw or "northern mango") is an exceptional cultivar prized for its distinctive tropical flavor and good cold hardiness. This variety was selected in 2010 by Woody Walker in Kentucky and introduced to the market in 2015.
- Fruit Characteristics
- Flavor and Aroma: The fruit has very sweet, creamy flesh with a flavor reminiscent of mango, with hints of pineapple and vanilla pudding.
- Size: The fruit is medium to large, typically weighing 170–300 grams.
- Appearance: The flesh is bright yellow and contains several larger seeds. The skin is thin and, when fully ripe, exhibits a “color break”—it turns yellow.
- Storage life: Thanks to its slightly thicker skin, the fruit bruises less easily and keeps longer in cold storage than other varieties.
- Cultivation and Requirements
- Climate: This is a late-season variety that requires a long, hot summer for optimal ripening and flavor development. In cooler regions or during short summers, the fruit may not fully ripen.
- Hardiness: The plant is fully hardy; mature plants can withstand temperatures of -25 °C to -28 °C.
- Habitat: Requires a sunny location protected from drafts. However, young plants must be shaded from direct sunlight for the first 2 years.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, deep, moderately moist, but well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH.
- Pollination: This variety is not self-pollinating. To ensure a harvest, it is necessary to plant another genetically distinct asimina cultivar nearby.
- Growth
- It grows as a large, spreading shrub or a small tree with a pyramidal crown. The leaves are large, elliptical, and turn a bright yellow color in the fall.
