- Asimina triloba 'Susquehanna'
- is a premium, large-fruited variety of the three-lobed pawpaw (also known as the “Indian banana”), bred by American Neal Peterson as part of his famous Peterson Pawpaws collection. This variety is considered one of the highest quality due to its exceptional flavor, buttery texture, and very low seed content.
- Fruit Characteristics
- Size: The fruits are extremely large, often weighing over 240 g and, exceptionally, up to 400 g.
- Flavor and texture: The flesh is firmer than in other varieties (resembling a ripe avocado), has a deep yellow to orange color, and a very sweet, rich, exotic flavor with notes of banana and mango.
- Seeds: Contains only 3–4% seeds by total weight, which is one of the lowest seed-to-flesh ratios among cultivars.
- Ripening: It is a medium-late to late variety; under Central European conditions, it typically ripens from late September to mid-October.
- Cultivation and Requirements
- Habitat: Requires a sunny to partially shaded location protected from the wind. Young plants (first 1–2 years) are sensitive to direct sun and need shade.
- Soil: Prefers fertile, deep, moderately moist, and well-drained soils with a slightly acidic pH (5.5–7.0).
- Hardiness: Fully hardy in wood (down to -23 °C to -29 °C), but flowers may be damaged by late spring frosts.
- Pollination: This variety is cross-pollinated. To ensure a crop, it is necessary to plant another genetically distinct variety nearby (e.g., 'Shenandoah', 'Sunflower', or 'Potomac').
- Growth: It grows as a small tree with a pyramidal crown, reaching a height of 4–5 meters.
