  • Carya illinoinensis ‘Colby’, also known as Colby Northern Pecan, is a cultivar of the pecan tree.
  • It is a northern cultivar, which means it is adapted to a cooler climate than many southern varieties.
  • The ribbed form of ‘Colby’ is known for producing sweet, meaty, thin-shelled nuts in abundance. It is also a good pollinator for other pecan varieties.
  • Key characteristics of Carya illinoinensis 'Colby':
  • Origin: Found near Carlyle, Illinois, in 1957 and selected by A.S. Colby.
  • fruit: Large, thick-shelled nuts when grown from seedlings, but the grafted form produces sweet, fleshy, thin-shelled nuts.
  • Pollination: requires cross-pollination with another variety such as ‘Major’ or ‘Peruque’ to produce heavy nuts.
  • Growth habit: Develops a tree with a strong structure.
  • Leaf drop: Leaves drop late in the season.
  • Adaptation: Tolerates many soil types and is drought tolerant.
  • Size: Can grow to 10m tall and wide and potentially 15m+ after decades
  •  Nuts: Nuts ripen in September and October.
  • Uses: Good for wetlands and stream bank restoration
  •  You need to plant 2 varieties for a proper yield!
  • Container plant. Can be planted already. Plant it at the same depth as it was in the pot. You can mix mature cattle manure or compost into the soil as nutrients. Water regularly unless it rains.
