- Diospyros virginiana 'H-120'
- (also known as Claypool H-120) is a highly prized variety of Virginia persimmon that originated from James Claypool’s breeding program.
- Key characteristics of the H-120 variety:
Fruit flavor and quality: The fruit is rated as excellent, with pleasant caramel notes and a moderately firm texture. The flesh is bright and juicy, without the black specks found in some other varieties. - Size and shape: The fruit reaches a diameter of approximately 4 cm (about 1⅝ inches) and has a flat shape.
- Ripening: This is an early-ripening variety, which is advantageous for regions with shorter summers.
- Tree growth: The tree is medium-sized, very productive, and has good fruit set. When mature (with pruning), it can be maintained at a height of about 4.5–6 meters.
- Hardiness: Like most Virginia persimmons, it is very hardy; it is generally listed as hardy in USDA zones 5–9 (tolerates temperatures well below -20 °C).
- Cultivation:
- Habitat: It prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, but is adaptable to poorer soil conditions.
- Uses: The fruits are ideal for eating fresh when fully ripe (when they are soft) or for use in desserts, jams, and puddings.
- Rootstock: common persimmon - Diospyros lotus
