  • A VERY RARE AMERICAN HYBRID VARIETY available in limited quantities in our offer from 06-07/2026
  • Diospyros 'Kasandra'
  • (often written as Kassandra) is a highly prized hybrid persimmon created by crossing the American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) and the Asian persimmon (Diospyros kaki). This variety was bred with the aim of combining the excellent taste of Asian fruits with the frost resistance of American species.
  •     Key characteristics
  • Fruit: Medium to large (approx. 6–7 cm in diameter), yellow-orange in color, and when ripe, very sweet, orange flesh with a high sugar content (Brix up to 21).
  •     Kassandra is an astringent persimmon, and after harvesting, the fruit needs 2–3 weeks to ripen off the tree. The process can be accelerated by placing them near ripening apples, pears, or bananas. Alternatively, the fruit can be left on the tree until late autumn (even after the leaves have fallen) until they soften.
  •     Frost resistance: It is one of the most resistant hybrids, tolerating temperatures of -24 °C to -27 °C. This makes it suitable for cultivation even in colder areas outside traditional wine-growing regions.
  •     Ripening: It is an early variety that usually ripens in October in European conditions.
  •     Pollination: It is self-pollinating, so it does not need another plant to bear fruit. However, if a pollinator is present, the fruits may be larger and contain seeds.
  • Habitat: It requires full sun and a location protected from strong winter winds. Well-drained, humus-rich soil is ideal.
  •     Growth: The tree grows moderately vigorously and reaches a height of approximately 3 meters with a hemispherical crown when mature (around 10 years).
  •     Resistance: The variety is very resistant to pests and fungal diseases, which allows for organic cultivation without chemical protection.
  •     Care in youth: Winter protection of the trunk is recommended for the first two to three years after planting, until the plant is sufficiently woody.
  • It is a variety of 50% Diospyros kaki and 50% Diospyros virginiana, similar to the 'Rosseyanka' variety.
