- Pistacia vera 'Napoletana' (sometimes called Nostrale or Bianca) is a cultivar of the true pistachio tree that is grown primarily in Sicily, in the Bronte region, and is protected by a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This variety, one of the few suitable for cultivation in the climatic conditions of Central Europe, is characterized by its medium-sized, oval fruits with a tasty green kernel, which are considered to be of high quality.
- Variety Characteristics
- Fruits: Medium-sized, oval pistachios with a reddish-brown shell. The kernel is green to greenish-white and has a delicate, aromatic flavor.
- Appearance: An upright-growing shrub or tree with rapid growth.
- Rootstock: In Italy, it is almost exclusively grafted onto Pistacia terebinthus rootstock, locally known as 'spaccasassi' for its ability to grow through stony soil on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna.
- Usage: The nuts are intended for direct consumption, but also for further processing into baked goods and ice cream.
- Dioecy: Pistacia vera is a dioecious plant, meaning that both male and female plants are required for fruit production.
- Pollination: Pollination occurs via the wind and is also influenced by local topography, such as Mount Etna.
- Origin: The 'Napoletana' variety originates from the Bronte region of Sicily, where it is grown on the slopes of Mount Etna in a rugged landscape, which contributes to the unique character of the fruits.
- Rootstock we use: UCB1 - a rootstock suitable for marginal growing regions
