  •     The 'Goycay' variety (also spelled Göycay or Göyçay) of the pomegranate (Punica granatum) is named after the Azerbaijani region of Göyçay, which is world-renowned as the pomegranate capital and hosts a famous annual pomegranate festival.
  •     This is a top-quality, highly prized variety that originates from a region with ideal conditions for growing the finest pomegranate trees.
  •     ? Characteristics of the 'Goycay' variety
  •     Fruit quality: The fruits are typically large and round, with a firm, bright red to dark ruby-red skin.
  •     Flavor profile: The variety is exceptional for its excellent balance of sugars and acids. The juice from these fruits has an intense, full-bodied, sweet-and-sour flavor and is considered one of the most delicious in the world.
  •     Seeds (aryls): Inside the fruit, the seeds are dark red and very juicy. The seeds inside the flesh are typically medium-hard to soft (depending on the specific subtype/clone).
  •     ? Hardiness and cultivation in the Czech Republic
  •     Azerbaijani varieties are generally among the more cold-hardy, as their native region experiences frosts in winter.

  •     Frost hardiness: Reported hardiness in USDA Zone 7a (can tolerate short-term frosts down to approximately \(-15\) °C to \(-17\) °C).
  •     Cultivation method: Despite its higher hardiness, it is recommended to grow it primarily as a potted plant in the Czech Republic. Planting directly in the ground is possible only in the warmest wine-growing regions (South Moravia, Prague) in a very sheltered location near a south-facing wall, with thorough winter protection.
  •     Requirements: Requires maximum direct sunlight and heat during the summer so that the fruit can ripen properly (late October to November). The soil should be well-drained and not waterlogged.

  •     In European nurseries, this variety occasionally appears in the selection for collectors and growers seeking authentic genetic resources from the Caucasus, which are distinguished by the unrivaled flavor of their fruit.
