- Punica granatum 'Sándor' is a distinctive and exceptionally large-fruited variety of pomegranate that is gaining popularity in European nurseries primarily due to the enormous size of its fruits and high juice content.
- Key characteristics of the 'Sándor' variety
- Extremely large fruits: This variety is distinguished by its enormous fruits. The average weight of a single pomegranate is around 830 grams, making it one of the largest cultivars available on the market.
- High juice yield: Up to 350 ml of juice can be extracted from a single fruit. The percentage of pure juice relative to the total fruit weight is approximately 42%.
- Sweetness: The juice has a high sugar content, reaching 16° Brix. The taste is therefore distinctly sweet, with only a minimal hint of acidity.
- Appearance: The fruits have a firm skin ranging in color from yellow-red to deep red, and inside they contain deep ruby-colored, fleshy seeds (arils).
- Growing Instructions
Due to the enormous size of the fruit, 'Sándor' requires optimal conditions to ripen properly in our latitudes: - Heat and light: It requires the warmest possible location in full sun (e.g., near a south-facing wall of a house, sheltered from the wind).
- Overwintering: As with other Mediterranean and Asian varieties, it is safest to grow it in the Czech Republic as a potted plant. It should overwinter in a cool, frost-free room (ideally 2 to 8 °C), shedding its leaves for the winter.
- Watering During Ripening: During the summer and fruit development, it requires regular watering but must not stand in waterlogged soil. Consistent moisture is key to prevent the giant fruits from cracking before harvest.
