  • Variety
Asimina triloba 'Mary Foos Johnson' (also known as the three-lobed banana or "banana of the north") is a prized cultivar that was originally found as a wild seedling in Kansas and later selected by Milo Gibson in 1965.
  • Key Features
Fruit: Medium to large fruits, 5–12 cm long, that can weigh up to 250 g. They have a yellow skin and a yellowish (buttery) flesh with an excellent flavor that is often compared to a combination of banana and mango with a subtle hint of vanilla.
Seeds: Contains a relatively small number of large seeds, making them easy to eat.
Ripening: This is a medium-early variety. The fruits usually ripen from late September to early October.
Pollination: This variety is considered partially self-pollinating, but to ensure higher yields and better quality fruits, it is recommended to plant another genetically different cultivar (e.g. 'Sunflower', to which it is closely related).
  • Cultivation and appearance
  • Growth: A deciduous tree growing to a height of around 5–6 meters with an oval crown. It has large, fresh green leaves that turn bright yellow in autumn.
  • Frost resistance: Very high, tolerates temperatures down to -25 °C (USDA zone 5), which makes it suitable for cultivation in the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic.
  • Habitat: Prefers deep, fertile and moist soils with a slightly acidic pH. Young plants require shading in the first two years (protection from sunburn), adult trees then bear fruit best in full sun.
  • Resistance: The tree is highly resistant to wildlife (deer avoid it due to the natural toxins acetogenins in the leaves and bark) and suffers from virtually no diseases or pests.

This cultivar is popular with growers primarily for its high productivity and attractive exotic appearance throughout the growing season
