The plant comes from the Rhamnaceae family and the genus Ziziphus.
The plant is also popularly called Chinese jujube or Chinese date.
Grows to a height of around 4 meters.
The homeland of the tree is China.
It is basically a subtropical deciduous tree that has sweet edible fruits the size of olives.
When ripening, they acquire a yellow-orange to reddish hue.
The leaves of this tree contain the peptide zizifin, the interesting thing about which is that it can temporarily block the perception of sweet taste.
The leaves are elliptical, alternate, light green and small.
The plant forms two types of shoots, one is fruit-bearing, sprouts in the spring and falls with the fruit in the fall, the other is vegetative, which forms the additions of the tree or shrub to the wood.
The flowers are small, yellow, arranged in racemes.
The branches are irregularly shaped and have a few thorns at each node.
The plant prefers warm, sunny and sheltered locations with permeable, humus, moderately moist soil.
It is suitable for smaller gardens as a fruit-bearing and at the same time interestingly growing woody plant. Large-fruited variety, fruits up to 4 cm long barrel-shaped.
The plant is grafted and has a height of up to 70cm+. I recommend winter protection for the first winter.
