- The original range of the Japanese silverberry (Elaeagnus umbellata) was in China and Japan. In many countries, including England and the USA, it has become very popular as one of the best multifunctional shrubs for establishing edible fruit forests on poorer soils. The red berries are perhaps the most attractive part of this shrub. They grow in clusters on both younger and older branches. They taste sweet and aromatic, and most people immediately enjoy them. They can be eaten raw in large quantities and often, unlike sour currants or tart chokeberries. They are very attractive to forest animals and birds. They ripen from late September to early November and contain one large seed. They need to be left to ripen properly to get rid of their tartness. They even remain on the bush after the first winter frosts, and their taste improves.
- The bush grows to a height of up to 4 m and a similar width, but often remains smaller and is quite frost-resistant. In some extreme winters, one of several bushes may freeze partially or completely above ground, but it will sprout again from the base of the stem. This species is often bred, and there are commercial cultivars with not only larger fruits but also different growth types.
- It blooms with small white-yellow flowers from late May to June and usually escapes late spring frosts. The inconspicuous flowers are self-pollinating and pollinated by bees. They smell wonderful! The flowering of hawthorns is an important olfactory event in the garden.
