  • Olea europaea ‘Manzanillo’ - the Manzanillo olive - is a classic Spanish variety valued for its dual use, ideal for table olives and olive oil production. It grows as a medium-sized evergreen tree with a dense, spherical crown of silvery green leaves, offering Mediterranean charm and year-round structure.
Reaching a height of 4-6 metres and a spread of 3-4 metres, it is suitable for planting in gardens, production gardens, containers and formal hedges. Its open central shape allows excellent light penetration and airflow, promoting reliable fruiting. In spring the tree produces fragrant creamy white flowers which are important for fruit set.
Once established, it is very drought tolerant, thrives in full sun and adapts to coastal, urban and poorer soils. Its low maintenance requirements and annual pruning to shape and boost yields make it the best choice for gardeners looking for an ornamental yet productive olive tree with proven results.
        Frost resistance: to -16 °C
  •     Growing in the early years: young olive trees are usually grown in pots or buckets. Old trees are much hardier than young ones. If the roots freeze, the tree will die. For overwintering in a cold house, a temperature of plus 10 degrees is ideal. Light is needed for this. If there is too little light, the olive tree loses its leaves. Water little, do not fertilise, do not let the bales dry out, ventilate the winter quarters sufficiently. Clean up as soon as possible. Don't expose it to the sun right away, get used to it slowly. Strong plants at least 2 to 3 years old should be planted outside. The ideal place for planting is a sunny spot near the south wall. It is protected from northerly winds and increases the chances of the olive trees overwintering. Younger plants can tolerate frosts down to -10 °C, older plants down to -16 °C.
