Punica granatum 'Al Sirin Nar' (sometimes referred to as 'anor' or 'nar,' which means 'pomegranate' in Uzbek and Azerbaijani) is a highly productive and cold-hardy variety of the common pomegranate. It originates from Central Asia (Azerbaijan or Turkmenistan) and is known for its ability to tolerate lower temperatures better than common Mediterranean varieties.
Key characteristics of the variety
Fruit: Large, glossy, with an attractive bright red to dark cherry-red skin.
Taste: The seeds (arils) are pinkish-red, very juicy, with a complex, sweet-and-sour to pleasantly tart flavor.
Uses: Due to its higher juiciness and firmer seeds, this variety is ideal for pressing fresh juice.
Growth: The plant is very vigorous, growing as an upright, densely branched shrub or small tree up to about 3 meters tall. It is among the highest-yielding varieties of all.
Growing Conditions in the Czech Republic
In our climate, specific growing conditions are required:
Location: Requires maximum sun (ideally a south-facing slope) and shelter from the wind. The fruit skin is resistant to sunburn.
Wintering (Hardiness): Although it belongs to the so-called "Russian" hardy varieties, which as mature plants can withstand short-term drops in temperature (down to approximately -12 °C to -15 °C), growing it in a portable container is recommended in the Czech Republic. Young plants will reliably freeze. Over the winter, it needs a dormant period in a cool room (up to 6 °C), where it will shed its leaves.
Soil and Watering: The growing medium must be perfectly well-draining (a mixture of garden soil, compost, and sand or perlite). It does not tolerate waterlogging. Allow the loamy-sandy substrate to dry out between waterings.
Pruning: Prune in the spring before new growth emerges. Fruits form on older wood, usually 3 to 4 years after planting.
